Most dead boilers are a £60 part.
Gas Safe registered, working out of Urmston. We diagnose before we quote, and we will tell you when a repair is the wrong answer — but that is a conclusion, not an opening offer.

What it costs
The part price is the part price
Parts are charged at what they cost us plus 15%, and the invoice shows both numbers. This is the invoice — the form itself, with the rates printed into it.

| Diverter valve replaced Hot water but no heating, or the other way round. Two hours on site. This is the single most common “you need a new boiler” that isn’t — and the part is the sixty pounds the headline is about. | £62.00 | £9.30 | £156.002 hours | £227.30 |
| Expansion vessel recharged Pressure dropping every few days. Recharged first; replaced only if it will not hold, and we show you the gauge. Nothing was fitted, so there is nothing to mark up. | none | — | £117.001½ hours | £117.00 |

Printed at the foot of every invoice
Parts are listed at what we paid for them, with the 15% handling on a line of its own rather than folded into the price. The supplier invoice goes in the folder with the commissioning sheet; ask for it and it is yours.
Labour is the first hour at £78 and £39 each half hour after it, rounded down. Nothing is added for parking, for coming back with a part we should have had on the van, or for the phone call before it.
If the repair does not go ahead you have still paid for an hour and a written answer, and there is nothing else on the form.

Who turns up
Whoever answers the phone
Copperline is Danny Hart. One van, one engineer, no call centre and no subcontractors. The person who takes your call is the person who arrives, which is why the phone sometimes rings out for ten minutes and why you get a text back rather than being put in a queue.
Nineteen boilers out of two hundred and three got replaced last year. The other hundred and eighty-four got repaired, and a good number of those had already been told by somebody else that they were finished.
Where a replacement genuinely is the right call we will say so, show you why on the readings, and quote it — and we are happy for you to take that quote somewhere else.

Every category is printed on the back of the real card. If your job is not on ours we will tell you on the phone and point you at somebody whose card says it is.
Ask to see it at the door. It is the only claim on this page you can check without taking our word for it: read the number off the card, put it into the public register, and you will know inside ten seconds whether the man in your kitchen should be there.

Tell us what it is doing
Fault codes help enormously. If there is a number on the display, that number is usually half the diagnosis.
What the number on the display usually means
Codes differ between makes, so treat these as families rather than a diagnosis. Pick one and it goes into the form.
Usually meansThe gauge has dropped under about one bar and the boiler has stopped rather than run dry.
Checked firstWhether it is dropping. A one-off top-up is nothing; the same code every fortnight is a leak or a tired expansion vessel, and those are two different jobs.
Usually meansIt asked for gas, tried to light, failed a few times and locked itself out.
Checked firstGas at the appliance, the condensate trap, then the electrodes — three cheap things, in that order, before anybody says the word replacement.
Usually meansThe pump ran but the pressure sensor never saw the water move.
Checked firstAir in the pump head. A sensor that cannot see water is usually a sensor with air in front of it rather than a dead pump.
Usually meansIt lights, runs for a minute or two, then drops out again.
Checked firstThe condensate pipe. In a cold snap it is frozen outside far more often than it is anything on the inside.
Usually meansThe safety stat has taken the boiler off because the water got too hot to circulate.
Checked firstFlow and return temperatures, then the filter. A blocked system reads exactly like a dying boiler and is not one.
If your code is not one of these five, put it in the box anyway — it is still half the diagnosis, and it decides what goes on the van before we set off.
Fastest is the phone — 0161 496 0256. If Danny is under a floor he will text back within the hour.
No heat or no hot water gets same-day where we can, and we will tell you honestly on the call if we cannot get to you rather than booking you in and letting the day slide.
If you have had a quote for a new boiler and it does not feel right, send us what you were told. Second opinions on the phone are free and take about four minutes.
