Five soups, one pan, and the weather gets a vote — a wet Saturday has been known to move the barley to Friday. Bread on the side, from the same loaf as the beans.

Every café has these. Most make you find them out at the door. Ours are printed on one card, both sides — and the awkward one is first.

    The till doesn’t take cash. Apologies to the walker with the emergency tenner in the boot of the car — the machine takes a tap from a phone, so you’ll still get fed.

  • dogs welcome — the well-behaved kind

    Water bowl by the door, a towel behind the counter if it’s been raining, and a biscuit if they can sit. On a lead at the long table.

  • boots are fine

    Leave the worst of the moor on the mat and nobody will look at your feet again. The floor has seen everything.

  • closed monday & tuesday — bank holidays included

    Set in the same letters as the open days, because a closed day is information, not an apology. It’s when the baking and the walking get done.

  • two small steps — about 100 mm each

    We measured them so you don’t have to guess, and we printed the number on the door rather than making you ask at the counter. If wheels or sticks make them a problem, ring when you’re close: there’s a ramp, and putting it out takes a minute.

  • no laptops friday & saturday

    Wednesday and Thursday, work away all day — the window seat is good for it. Fridays and weekends the tables are for people and their dinner.

Up the valley

where it all comes down from

Short distances, known names, no romance about it — the valley is simply where the good stuff already was. Drive times from our door, rounded down.

A long-section of the valley. The café sits at the low point of the valley floor beside the packhorse bridge. Two suppliers stand on the same floor — Mytholmroyd about two miles one way, Todmorden about five miles the other — and two stand up the hillside: Old Town about a mile and a half up, and a dairy about four miles up Cragg Vale. the coffee — about two miles

Waterside & Holt, Mytholmroyd. A roast every fortnight, and we pour whatever came off it. The cortado moves with them: some fortnights it is all blackcurrant, some it is cocoa and not much else. Ask what is in the hopper and somebody will tell you at length.

the bread — about five miles

Fieldgate Bakehouse, Todmorden. Sourdough down the valley on the first 590 bus of the morning, six days a week, which everyone finds funnier than the driver does. When the bake is short the rarebit goes first and the beans keep going — the bread decides which of the two we run out of.

the milk — about four miles

A dairy above Cragg Vale. Milk twice a week, up what is signed as the longest continuous ascent in England. The herd has names; ask, and we will happily bore you. Late in the summer the milk goes sweeter and the hot chocolate needs less sugar — we change it and say nothing.

the eggs — about a mile and a half

Old Town, straight up the hill. Collected twice a week. Yolks the colour of the gorse, which is why the fell hash looks like that. In deep winter the hens slow down and the hash comes off the card before the brunch does.

first saturday of the month we open at eight for the fell runners — porridge on early, and the pot goes on with it. The parkin is ours, to a recipe that has caused two arguments since 2021 and won both.

Coming off the hill

The cobbled way down is the quick one, and it is steep and wet underfoot for most of the year. The road round takes about five minutes longer and is step-free the whole way to the door — bar the two steps at the door itself, and we’ll put the ramp out for those.
